What is your county's numbering system for your buses. Fairfax starts at bus #1 (2003 AmTran) and go to 1710 (the highest number I've seen) a 2005 AmTran not yet in service. When we retire a bus, we give a new bus the old number. |

Bus Number, dash, and then the year. Example Bus 71 is an 04'. Bus number is 71-04.
When replaced, I try and number the new buses in a block. I dislike skipping.

Hey scotty, I always wonder what the very FIRST bus #1 was? And how many mules it took to pull it! |

The buses here are numbered in numerical order, 1 through 141.
When a bus is retired, its number is replaced. For example, # 50 used to be a 1989 Blue Bird All American FE, and when it was traded-in, # 50 became a 2003 Blue Bird All American RE.
There are a few gaps in the numbering, but within recent years, a lot of those gaps have been filled-in.
Sometimes, when a bus is retired, the school district will keep it as a spare for however long they need it. In that case, a "1" is placed before the number. Two summers ago, when the 1991 Thomas Saf-T-Liner ERs were retired, # 68 was kept as a spare and re-numbered as # 168. Last summer, however, low-digit numbers were replaced, and a "2" had to be placed before the number. # 21 would've become # 121, but since we already have a # 121, it became # 221.
I like that numbering system. I also like how the school district that I go to school in numbers their buses. Theirs are, for the most part, numbered by the first and last digits of the year-model followed by a unit number. For example, # 241 is the first 2004 year-model that was purchased, # 247 is the seventh 2004 year-model that was purchased, and so on.
I don't like it when a school district has a mixed way of numbering their fleet, though. The same school district that I go to school in mixes some of their numbers, and some of the buses are numbered with the year-model followed by a unit number while others only have a unit number. That bothers me for some reason. |

We have a small fleet so we use the year number for the bus. We used to always follow the year number by a "-A" which is where my name 86-A comes from, we stopped doing that for a while and have resumed again, hence my current bus 04-A. In the 90's we just used the year number unless we purchased more than one bus in that year then we used "95-1, 95-2" If we only purchased one bus then it would just be "99" but we have returned to using the letters in the bus number so next years buses will be 06-A and 06-B since we are getting two units. |

I should have mentioned that bus #1 is a special ed bus. We (spec ed) also have bus #3. All the other single digit numbers are reg ed. I've never seen #2 but have seen #'s 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9. |

Bus #2 is one of the Area 1987 4 lamp Wards. I dont think it's still on the road though. The only 87 wards on the road that I know of are: 315, 715 (Training Center), 744, 1030, 1034, 1060, and 1063. SE still has 689 and 690. The 1988 GMC/Chevys are starting to be surveyed now-retired: 203, 515, 282, and 265 at West Ox.

We number our buses 1-126 space for expansion then 130-134 contracted buses. Then we have 1-17 again for our special needs buses that are contracted. Even though our numbers are not in order at each school since we've added alot of buses since the orignal numbering we are looking into renumbering all the buses. We also have Bus # 0,00,129, and 13-special needs bus. that are district owned buses.
When a bus is replaced you just put the number you had on your other bus back on your new bus. |

I see bus 6 on Lee Hwy all the time...it's a reg ed Ford/Wayne.
If they are starting to retire the '88 GMC/Waynes....the FIRST one to go should be 27. It's the absolute worst heap I've driven!
BTW, 744 has a white roof....which looks weird on an old IH/Ward! |

For regular buses:
Originally, they started with 1, and end with 150. However, as buses are retired and new ones are brought in, they aren't usually replaced with the same number.
Hence,
10-12:2003 13-19:2004 20-31:2005 39-48:1999 49-62:1998 63-69:2001 71,73-82:1982 87,90,92,94,97:1984 107-131:1992 132-136:1993 137-148:1996 149,150:1995
And for special ed, they originally were all in the 400s, but dipped into the 300s, but our new conventionals are 200s:
381-419:2003 430-446:1999 450-453:1997 470-472:1988 478-482:1991 483-486:1992 487-492:1993 493-499:1995 201-205:2004 206-251:2005 |

Palm Beach uses what I consider to be one of the most logical numbering systems, two digit year followed by two digit bus number. For example, bus 9965 is a 1999 Thomas Freightliner conventional, bus 0008 is a 2000 AmTran RE and bus 0446 is a 2004 Blue Bird All American RE. It makes it easy for us bus spotters to ID the year without having to look at the ID tag inside. Gotta love that |

IC--I've seen 744. But what is even wierder, there is an area III bus IH/Ward (87 or 88) with an 8 lamp system. I used to see it occassionally at Aldren last year. Unfortunately, i don't remember the number. |

We have bus 13, it's a SE bus. It's a 2003 IC-FE 60 passenger bus with a lift. I drove it once last year, no bad luck! We also have an Area 1 bus- 666! No one wanted to drive it last summer! |

I thought bus 2 was a Thomas ER? ScottyD I know what your talking about with the 8 lamp Wards, There are a few, but I don't remember their numbers. I was wondering where 282 went, I rode that bus several times this year, the dirver was moved to 714 I believe. I also used to ride bus 203 several years ago. IC, I see bus 911 by the Franklin Farm shopping center every day on my bus on the way home from school. I think it has a lift. With numbering though I do notice a pattern, Ex. most of our 1999 AmTran RE's with the black lowered dash's are numbered in the six's like our baker and Ranger are 627 and 659, 667... and the Thomas's are mostly in the 1400's, The Blue Birds reg and spec ed are in the 1300's and the 2000-2001 AmTran RE's are in the 1500's This is not 100% accurate it is just what I have noticed, Ford Waynes mostly in the 60's and 1200's. 2002-2003 IC-RE's in the 9's which used to be the 1984 Ford Waynes with the 4 lamp system. and 1000's for the 87's wards I think 666 used to be area III because I would se it every day and my driver would say how she never wante to drive that bus. My favorte bus and driver ever was 1557. I was so sad to hear that she was no longer driving, 1557 is now a spare for other amtran drivers whose bus's had long-term problems. Right now 730 is driving her. 1557 is the BEST!!!!!! |

203 has been retired. It is sitting at Wext Ox blacked out. 911 does not have a lift. The regular ed buses with a lift that I've seen are 5, 32, and 240. I know there are a couple of others but I don't know what there numbers are. Most of our Blue Birds are in the 1300's. Those are mainly '90's. 371, 372, 373, and 374are 1990 BB's. 1376 and 1377 are 1991's with strobe lights. 801, and most BB's in the 400's are 1994's. All 419-441 except 435 are Vista's, 442-459 are 1998 Thomas' (450 was totalled when a tree fell on it during Hurricane Isabelle--and 450 is now a brand new reg ed bus not yet in service at Newinton). 460-490 are Genesis. This I'm sure is not totally accurate. Bus 801 worked at Newington last summer and got his hands on a list of all buses, makes, models etc. Most of our 89 Fords are in the 320's - 340's. 800-836 are 87 Fords.

801 is actually a 1992 Blue Bird (the only one in the fleet). It was my first bus! It looks like the 94 models except it has a fold in air door, no roof hatch, and an air ride seat. It was a prototype bus for the 94 models. The only problem with it is that it's know for the most break downs! |

Our numbering system is year - bus number like 04-198, 05-207, 97-124 etc. The numbers go from 1-207. I dont know what they are going to do about 94-114 its in a junkyard. |

My district's buses are just numbered from 1 on up for the regular routes. I drive Bus 1 by the way! Special needs routes have an H in front of the number. Head start routes have an HS in front of the number. Mid-size buses (48 pass.) have an M in front of the number. Spare buses have an X after the number of the route that they used to run on. That is my FAVORITE part of my school's numbering system. Pretty common sense- huh! |

Our numbers start at 1 and just get higher. I don't know how they picked the numbers, because, for example bus 17 is newer than bus 18, and bus 1 is not the oldest bus. Maybe when older buses got retired they replaced that number instead of going higher. Also, there are some gaps in the numbers- there is no bus 2, 13, or 15. |

Our buses are numbered this way:
All of our buses have asset numbers. They are all six digit numbers. The first and last number indicate the year of the bus.
Example: 933006 is a "96", 911117 is a 97, 900098 is a 98 200990 is a 2000, 200032 is a 2002 And so on.
Then we have the route numbers on the bus, from route 1 to about 60. |

The newer the bus the higher the number. There are no more 100's but a few 200's. My bus 582 is a 1994. Our newest bus an 05 is 1233. I have my eye on that one! Close your ears Buster! |

I would confuse myself let alone others with some fancy numbering system. I use the K.I.S.S numbering system; start at 1 and work your way up. When a bus is replaced, it gets the same number as the old one.
Anyone have a bus #0? There used to be one in Central Ohio; I saw it every day but don't remember what district it came from. |

The town next to mine had a bus #0 about 8-10 years ago. This was one of their spare buses. Their regular route buses were numbered 1-77. All other spares had no numbers.
Our buses also have a 6-digit asset number. As far as route numbers are concerned, the buses numbered 1-71 with many gaps in route numbers. |

Very interesting how different places number their buses. One thing though, in my district, your bus number is also your radio call sign, so the longer they are, the harder they are to say and the easier they are to misunderstand. Hey AmTran, yours are really long...six digits! You guys must use something else for your radio call signs? |
