That was the coolest stop sign I have ever seen! In my county they are LED so they have double blinking circular lamps above the word stop. |

That IDIOT in the black Blazer cutting-off the bus. I'll say it again--95% of all people loose ALL common sense when they get behind the wheel of a car. |

SchoolBusFan, That's great that the news man actually went thru the training and got behind the wheel. It is an eye opener. More people like school board execs, police officers etc. should do the same . I'm sure we would get alot more help and respect if they would atleast ride along to see what it's really like.
People DO NOT want to be behind a bus! But they really must trust us because they sure take their chances! |

Also the most expensive, yet, least effective in my opinion. Eight of our buses have them, and I hate them; I wish we'd go back to the two-light signs, much more noticeable.

BusLady, in my county there is one or two cops assigned to each elementary middle and High school, (235 schools in total) Almost all of theses officers, known as school resource officers have a commercial school bus drivers liscense. It comes in very handy if a driver has parked their bus in a bad spot during her mid-day break and the cop can just hop on and move it! Also, in our elementary schools, the sixth graders can be scbool bus patrols, I was one, it is a great sense of aouthority, now it seems kinda silly though, LOL! Anyway we had to go through intense training, and attend several different patrol camps, and each time it was an officer who drove us. We also had to simulate different emergencies in the bus with the cop, like pulling the emergency brake whil in motion, exiting the bus through rear and side exits. here are some links. http://fcps.edu/fts/tran/safety/patrolinstruction.htm That is an old picture we got rid of those ford waynes years ago, they were 83's. My driver called them all BESSY! LOL here is another link. http://www.fcps.edu/fts/safety-security/safety/safetybus.htm This is the safety bus it is awesome, I have been on it several times at the Fairfax Fair, and it used to come to my school when I was little http://fcps.edu/fts/tran/safety/instruction.htm |

Those stop arms are more noticeable than the traditional with two- lights. A study was released by a few Universities a few years ago and they came up with the following deductions: * The signs are more visible because the word stop is not distorted by a flashing light above and below the word. * In the dark, the word stop is visible from further away than two flashing incadescent, l.e.d., or strobe light. * in the dark, the word stop is almost completely blinded by the stop arms with two- lights blocking out the word stop until the car is within a few feet of the stop arm * During the day, any flashing lights are faded from day light thus resuting in again, the distoring look of the word stop on the older stop arms.
This plus less maintenance is why I switched to the l.e.d. stop arm by transpec |

That piece on the news was VERY well done! They focused on the issues just the way we would. Our main concern is keeping the kids safe dispite all the stupid things pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists do! |
Nothing great has ever been accomplished without enthusiasm! |

Thanks for the links IC-RE. You are lucky to live where there is so much effort made. I think I will print out some of these ideas for my terminal manager. Thanks! |

It's me again. Here's another video. This was on February 14, 2005. Enjoy.
http://www.kvbc.com/global/video/popup/pop_player.asp?ClipID1=352025&h1=Clark%20County%20Running%20Short%20Of%20Qualified%20School%20Bus%20Drivers&vt1=v&at1=Education&d1=139200&LaunchPageAdTag=Education&activePane=info&playerVersion=1&rnd=40486265
Link to the Story:http://www.kvbc.com/Global/story.asp?S=2947259
The Story:
More than 130 thousand students pack Clark County school buses every day. There aren't enough drivers to handle that. One student, who lives in Primm, wasn't even able to ride the bus he was zoned for until Kids First stepped in. It's an issue News 3's Kendall Tenney followed closely for so long. Now, he's taking it a step further, showing you what no one else can.
He's taking the school district's two week training course to be an official bus driver. It requires dressing the part, and getting the lingo down. "Remember where our gauges should be at?"
"Between 100 and 125. Do these buses come with the air pressure overflow?"
"Once it reaches 125, it will start to spit off."
After checking the brake's air pressure, it was on to emergency exits. "Check, make sure it's clearly labeled. When I lift this handle, I should get a buzzer." Problems like that would keep a bus in the yard. The entire time, he checks and records the inspection with an electronic system. "That means we've checked the engine, it's good. The rest of the bus hasn't been checked yet."
"You're going to scan that tag."
Now in this case, this door was broken. Any problems he finds are recorded, so supervisors or even NHP troopers can check how well he maintains the bus. It's an inspection he'll do every time he boards a bus for the next two weeks. "All that's done in 10 minutes." 10 minutes that start every morning to keep kids safe at the end of every day. "Safety comes first. It's up to you to make it happen."
He's not driving kids yet. That won't happen for another two weeks, when he graduates. Until then, he'll train starting at six-thirty every day.

I noticed one article said "Some buses have seatbelts because they transport preschool kids AND THEIR PARENTS to school".Are the parents allowed to ride? They are NOT here. Only One day in the beginning of the year or when a new student starts. |

He didn't mean taking kids and parents to school, he said taking them to and from "school programs." At least, I don't know why parents would ride with their kids to school. If they did that why not just drive your kid to school? When I talked to the driver of our preschool she said that the front half of the bus has seat belts for the children, and the back seats don't have them, so that parents can ride more comfortably on field trips. Here, no one is allowed to ride our buses without permission, and a background check. That is the rule for field trips, I would doubt anyone is allowed on the bus period, when the bus is preforming a daily route, unless the child is handicap and the parent gets special permission from the school board. |

seeing all those videos about that news anchor who is willingly to participate in driver training is really awesome...but i do agree. i think it a lot more people should see videos of what drivers go through on training, or on a regular day, or when there is an emergency. there would be a lot more understanding people of what a School Bus Driver goes through to be a driver and on a daily basis, and what they'd have to do in the event of an emergency.
i wonder if a class or something that actually existed like that would be offered to the public... how many would attend at their own will?? |
